Hong Kong Pavilion
London Design Biennale 2018

Responding to the 2018 London Design Biennale theme of ‘Emotional States’, the Hong Kong pavilion engaged visitors in an olfactory encounter with metaphysical memories of Hong Kong – a spatial design exploration of immersive visual intensity and the emotive links between time, space, presence and sense of smell.
Architecturally brought to life by longtime collaborator Wendy W Fok and the team at WE-Designs, the pavilion pulls audiences into a chamber of kaleidoscopic ‘scratch-n-sniff’ wallpapers. Here, the curation of visuals and scents evokes both a need to stand back and take in the pop-art visual intensity, as well as inviting an intimate moment of physical sensorial engagement as visitors press close to the walls in the playful act of ‘scratch-n-sniff’.

Examining the identity of Hong Kong as a ‘place of memory’, sense of smell was explored as a vehicle for connecting with nostalgias and lived experiences of Hong Kong through references of everyday spirituality, food culture, and colonial history.
